Welcome

Namilyango College, the oldest Secondary School in Uganda, was founded on the 23rd March 1902, by the Mill Hill Missionaries.

Bishop Hanlon, the first Mill Hill Bishop in Uganda, started what was later to become Namilyango College, with a two-fold purpose:

  • To train catechists needed for evangelization
  • To educate sons of chiefs
  • The aims and objectives of the school were summarized in its then motto, Education for Responsibility which morphed to Nisi Dominus to capture the religious background against which the school was started. Nisi Dominus is a quotation from the Biblical Book of Psalms, Psalm 127. In Latin it reads; “Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum, in vanum laboraverunt qui aedificant eam”. In English it translates “If God does not build a house, in vain do its builders toil”.

    The Badge

The school badge constitutes a flying Dove carrying a branch, an Anchor and the ‘Paxi Christ’ symbol. The white dove with blue background, representing the Holy Spirit, symbolizes the peaceful search for knowledge. The Red Anchor with Yellow background symbolizes the firm and strong foundation that the school is built on. The Yellow ‘Paxi Christ’ with Red background represent the Catholic tradition of the school.

The school flag consists of green and yellow colours, in four squares arranged in a pattern where the two colours are adjacent to each other. The flag is flown at all official school functions and every Tuesday morning during school assemblies. You’ll also find it flown in many an alumni home and work places.

    School Anthem

Bless this school, Oh Lord we pray,
Make it safe by night and day.
Bless these walls so firm and stout,
    Keeping want and trouble out.
Bless each master, bless each boy,
Let thy peace be all our joy.
Bless the door that it may prove,
Ever open to joy and love.

    Bless the windows shinning bright,
    Letting in God’s heavenly light.
Bless the school and it Thy own,
With prayers ascending to Thy throne.
Bless the people who dwell herein,
Keep them pure and free from sin.
Bless us all that we one day,
    May dwell with Thee eternally.

    AMEN.
